Opaline Restaurant

Los Angeles, CA
2003
Opaline once occupied a busy storefront on Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. The design was intended to create a serene and yet exciting dining environment that complements the menu; to be simple, honest, comfortable, and well executed. Polished concrete floors are contrasted by a ceiling of stained poplar slats, which screen the mechanical equipment but at the same time provide sound attenuation. The continuous fabric of wood on the ceiling is complimented by the accents of chocolate brown cork walls. An obstacle became the focal piece in the center of the dining room where an existing column was transformed into a light sculpture of fiberglass and a custom "brothel" couch was designed that comfortably anchors tables to the center. Dividing the two rooms is an existing wall with dark stained studs, layered with an etched glass and slat screen.
