Clarendon New Town

Jamaica
2001
This plan was submitted in response to an international competition to design a new town in Jamaica. The goal of the government in sponsoring this competition was to reverse the trend of sprawl that was slowly devouring the natural, unbuilt land of Jamaica. The plan focuses on creating an urban armature- a master plan that is a responsible use of the land; that celebrates the natural setting and acknowledges the climatic conditions; that creates mixed-use neighborhoods with civic, commercial, and natural amenities within walking distance of all residents; that balances the pedestrian with the automobile; and generates a pattern of development that is flexible and allows for change and interpretation at local levels.
