Koenig Residence

Los Angeles, CA
7,500 s.f., unbuilt
This project was designed for a site in a unique neighborhood at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains- where streets are replaced by paths, cars by horses and buildings by numerous trees. The house turns its back on Sunset Boulevard and the harshness of the city to embraces the serenity of the canyon and mountain views. The site, liberated from deed restrictions that dictated both form and style sits adjacent to houses built in the previously conforming ranch style, which tends to introvert the home to protect its occupant from the environment through the use of deep, downward facing eaves that eclipse all but close yard views. This project, not bound by the ranch 'style', gestures outward and upward to embrace the site and enjoying both the immediate and more distant landscape physically as well as visually.
