Stoughton-Miller Residence

Los Feliz, CA
2008
4,000 s.f.
This new single-family residence in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles was built on a hillside site on a relatively tight budget. The constraints dictated the fairly simple form: the extruded box. Subtle operations were performed on the box to create interest and livability. On the upper/main living floor an exterior "courtyard" was created to provide a place to be outside, to allow for fresh air to circulate and to bring daylight into the back of the building. A staircase runs along the north edge of the building serving the lower floors and ending ultimately at the new gardens at the lowest level of the building. A large window-wall follows the stairs down to the lower levels allowing light to penetrate the lower floors.
