This design marries the needs and desires of contemporary modern living with the formal language of traditional design. Taking cues from historical homes back to Mount Vernon, this house was conceived of as a federal style home that has been added onto over the years. The massing is broken up with a series of components centered around a richly detailed entry and flanking rooms that establish the formal grandeur of the home. The informal "back of house" provides an open plan for comfortable use- however the rooms are still well defined through distinctively designed ceilings, and paneled walls. Traditional homes typically suffer from spaces too small or compartmentalized for contemporary lifestyles- with this project the spaces are large to meet the client's needs but well proportioned and full of interesting materials to provide a rich and varied environment.
